Staying Focused When Things Get Tough

Updated: Apr 22

February was a rollercoaster - for a lot of people.

Some days, I felt like I was smashing it—on top of my training, dialed in with nutrition, and making real progress.

Other days?

I struggled.

Energy dipped, motivation wavered, and the potential for excuses crept in.

But here’s the thing I keep reminding myself:

You don’t have to feel great to show up. You just have to show up.

The Reality of Progress

It’s easy to stay committed when everything is going smoothly. When you feel strong, when results are obvious, when motivation is high. But what about the days when things don’t go to plan?

That’s where most people fall off.

They think if they can’t give 100%, there’s no point in trying. But the truth is, progress isn’t made in perfect conditions—it’s made in the tough moments, when you decide to push forward despite the obstacles.

That’s why discipline beats motivation, every time. Motivation is unreliable. It comes and goes. But discipline? That’s what keeps you moving forward, no matter what.

The Power of Not Breaking the Chain

One of the biggest lessons I keep coming back to is from Atomic Habits:

👉 “Missing once is an accident. Missing twice is the start of a new habit.”

That applies to everything—training, tracking nutrition, drinking enough water, getting enough sleep.

If you miss a workout or a day of tracking, it’s not the end of the world.

But if you let it slide again, you’re at risk of creating a new habit of not doing it. The key is to never let one off day turn into two.

Looking Ahead to March & The Charity Challenge

With February wrapped up, I’m taking these lessons into March—especially with the Cycle For Sanctuary coming up.

I know there will be hard days ahead. Days where I’ll want to slow down, skip a session, or make excuses.

But I also know that those moments are where real progress happens.

So, here’s our plan for March:

✅ Keep showing up, no matter how I feel.

✅ Focus on small wins instead of perfect days.

✅ Never let one setback turn into two.

If February taught me anything, it’s that tough days don’t define your progress—how you respond to them does.

So if you’ve had a rough month, don’t dwell on it.

Take the lessons, reset, and move forward.

March is a fresh start, and it’s time to get after it.

Smash it team! 💪🔥
