This Spring, I’m embarking on an extraordinary charity challenge to make a difference in the lives of some of the most vulnerable members of our community.
I’ll be cycling from Leicester to tackle the iconic Three National Peaks Challenge, climbing Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), Scafell Pike, and finally Ben Nevis—a journey that will test my endurance, resilience, and spirit.
Leicester is home to over 1,000 asylum seekers—individuals who have fled unimaginable hardships in search of safety.
Many live in destitution, facing extreme isolation, poor health, and a lack of basic opportunities.
Leicester City of Sanctuary provides vital emotional and practical support to this community, offering a lifeline when it is needed most.
The Reality of Life as an Asylum Seeker
Did you know that Leicester has one of the highest numbers of destitute asylum seekers in the UK?
Many arrive here with no friends or family, no qualifications, and no hope for a better future. Studies show that refugees often experience poorer general and emotional health than the wider population, and more than half feel utterly alone in their new surroundings.
Leicester City of Sanctuary steps in to bridge this gap, empowering individuals with community support, skill-building opportunities, and a sense of belonging. With over 90 active volunteers and only three part-time staff members, they rely on donations to continue their vital work.
The Challenge:
From Leicester, I’ll cycle hundreds of miles to reach each of the UK’s three highest peaks:
-
Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) – The highest mountain in Wales, standing at 1,085m.
-
Scafell Pike – England’s tallest peak, at 978m.
-
Ben Nevis – Scotland’s majestic summit, rising to 1,345m.
At each destination, I’ll trade my bike for hiking boots, climbing to the summits before continuing on my journey. This will be a test of both physical and mental stamina, but it’s nothing compared to the challenges faced by asylum seekers every day.
How Can You Help?
I need your support to raise crucial funds for Leicester City of Sanctuary. Every pound donated will help provide asylum seekers with:
-
Access to emotional and practical support.
-
Opportunities to learn new skills and integrate into their community.
-
A chance to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.
Your generosity can transform lives, offering sanctuary to those who need it most.
